HP 5890 and HP7373A Autosampler
The HP 5890 was a laboratory workhorse for many years. Agilent is
reducing support for these units, but you can still find used and refurbished
HP 5890 units from third parties at very reasonable prices. This GC did not have a
built in RS-232 connection. HP provided two different options for the RS-232
connection. These RS-232 connections are recommended over an analog to
digital converter because there is no loss in signal.
Part number 19257A (also referred to as 19257-60010). This board is often pre-installed and is used for the ChemStation software from HP. You can recognize this option since both an RS-232 and an HPIB (also known as GPIB and IEEE-488) connection are provided.
Part number 19254A (also referred to as Option 560, and 19242-60030). Agilent does not provide this board anymore, but you can find it through parts dealers for about $1000. WillStein Software will provide the appropriate cable for use with our software (assuming that you have the 2x6 adapter to a 25 pin connection that is normally provided with this board). The HP 5890 will rarely have this board pre-installed.
Analog connection: You can also use the analog output from the HP 5890 and send it to a data acquisition board in your computer. Using the RS-232 connection is better, because it provides a 32 bit A/D conversion instead of a typical 16 bit resolution of most computer boards. >>>> Note that you do NOT need to purchase the 5890 add on module for this option.
The following attachment lists several cable configurations for the HP 5890 (click here).
Consider the Chromatography Toolkit as an alternative to the Chemstation software for upgrading used HP 5890's.
How can I tell if I have the 19254A or the 19257A?
These boards are referred to with several different part numbers depending
on whether the board was purchased with the 5890, or added as an upgrade.
The 19254A board has ONLY an RS-232 connection. The 19257A board has BOTH
an RS-232 and IEEE-488 connection.
HP 7673A
The following 2 boards are both required to use the HP7673A AutoSampler with
the HP 5890:
Controller 18594-60060
Com1 18594-60080
You can also use the IEEE-488 (GPIB, HPIB) connector. However, you must purchase a LabVIEW compatible GPIB controller for your computer.
